How do you avoid premature skin ageing?

It's normal for people to get thinner, drier skin as they get older, as well as more wrinkles and other signs of ageing. While there is no way to prevent your skin from ageing, dermatologists says that by taking a few easy measures, you can prevent premature skin ageing.

To avoid premature ageing of the skin

  • Protect your skin from the sun. Sun exposure plays a major role in premature skin aging. Find shade, wear sun-protective clothing — such as a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt, trousers, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-protective sunglasses— and apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to any skin not protected by clothing all year long. Choose apparel with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) number on the label for better sun protection.
  • Apply a facial moisturizer every day. Moisturizer keeps the skin hydrated, making it look younger. Although a sunscreen-containing moisturiser is convenient, keep in mind that sunscreen must be reapplied every two hours when you're outside.
  • Be gentle to your skin. Using skin care items called "hypoallergenic," "fragrance free “or” non-comedogenic" and limit face washing to twice everyday and after sweating.
  • Avoid doing the same facial expressions over and over again, like squinting, frowning or holding a straw or cigarette in your mouth, which can cause wrinkles over time. You can reduce this with lifestyle changes, such as wearing sunglasses to avoid squinting outdoors.
  • Stay away from the tanning beds. Tanning beds, like the sun, emit harmful ultraviolet radiation (UV), which can cause skin cancer and premature ageing, such as wrinkles and age spots. Using a self-tanner instead if you want to look tanned.
  • Make an effort to live a healthier lifestyle. Eating a safe, well-balanced diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables can help prevent skin damage and premature ageing. Furthermore, physical exercise will increase circulation and strengthen the immune system, giving the skin a more youthful look. Smoking and consuming alcohol in moderation are both harsh on the skin and should be avoided.
  • Consider applying a retinol cream to your skin. Retinol, a vitamin A derivative, is used in many over-the-counter skincare products in concentrations of up to 2%.A retinol cream can help prevent premature skin ageing when used on a regular basis. However, since it takes time for the skin to adapt to retinol, dermatologists advise starting with every other day instead of regular application. After a few weeks, if you don't have any unpleasant side effects, such as increased burning or redness, you should begin using the retinol on a daily basis. Consult your dermatologist whether a prescription retinoid cream is appropriate for doses greater than 2%.
